Anthropic now ships two agents that both "do the work for you", and the names make them sound closer than they are. I use both every day, Cowork for research and documents and Claude Code for building the systems that run my business. Here is how they differ, using Anthropic's own docs as the source for every fact.
The short version
| Claude Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Knowledge work: research, analysis, documents | Software: writing, debugging and shipping code |
| Where you use it | Claude on desktop, web and mobile, and the Chrome side panel | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, the desktop app and the web |
| Terminal needed | No | Optional (the desktop app and web have none) |
| Where the work runs | In the cloud on Pro and Max, reaching your folders through the desktop app | On your computer, or in cloud sessions on the web |
| Plans | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or an Anthropic Console account |
| Repeating work | Scheduled tasks that run in the cloud | Routines and desktop scheduled tasks |
What Claude Cowork is
Anthropic's help center describes Cowork as bringing Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding, with no terminal required. You describe an outcome, step away, and come back to finished work: formatted documents, organized files, synthesized research.
It reads the files most office work runs on. The Cowork product page lists Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, Markdown and common image formats, plus most programming languages. It connects to your apps through connectors, and you can schedule a task by typing /schedule. Those scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so your computer does not need to be awake.
What Claude Code is
The Claude Code overview calls it an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and integrates with your development tools. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in the desktop app and in the browser. Every surface uses the same engine, so your CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers work across all of them.
You do not have to be a developer to use it. You describe what you want and Claude writes the code. I wrote a separate guide on Claude Code for non-technical people if that is your situation.
The real difference: where the work happens
This is the part I would decide on. Anthropic's surfaces article says that since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud, and there is no setting to switch back. Your folders stay on your computer. Claude reaches only the folders you connect, through the desktop app, and only while it is open.
The same article gives the alternative in plain words: for new tasks that run only on your computer, use Claude Code in the desktop app, which keeps your folders and history on your machine.
So the choice is also a choice about place. Cowork follows your account across devices, and a task keeps going when you close the laptop. Claude Code works where your files are, which is what you want when you are building something that has to run on your machine or your server.
How each one checks with you
Both ask before acting by default, with ways to loosen that.
- Cowork has three modes: Manual, Auto and Skip. The getting started article notes that Auto mode reviews each action for safety and uses more of your usage limit than the other modes.
- Claude Code has a wider set. Per the permission modes doc, Manual mode stops and asks before most actions that edit files, run shell commands or reach the network. Plan mode lets Claude explore before it changes anything.
Pricing and limits
Neither tool has a separate price. Both come with a paid Claude plan. The pricing page shows Pro at $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually, and Max from $100 a month. Claude Code is not part of the Free plan.
The limits are shared. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says your activity across Claude on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draws from the same pool. Agentic work costs more of that pool than chat: the Cowork page says plainly that it consumes limits faster than chat.
Cowork is becoming part of Claude
One change to know before you decide. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first. In the new experience there is no mode to pick: you ask in any conversation and Claude decides whether the task needs Cowork's tools. Claude Code stays its own product.
Which one should you pick?
- Pick Cowork when the result is a document, a deck, a spreadsheet or research, and you want to hand it off and check back from your phone.
- Pick Claude Code when the result is something that keeps running: an agent, a script, an automation or a small app.
- Use both when you research and write in Cowork and build in Claude Code. Plugins you add are saved to your account and work in chat, Cowork and Claude Code alike.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code?
Anthropic builds Claude Code for software engineering: writing, debugging and shipping code. Claude Cowork is built for non-coding knowledge work like research, analysis and document creation. Both use the same agentic approach, so they plan and carry out multi-step tasks for you.
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. Anthropic's help center lists Cowork on the paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually.
Does Claude Cowork need the terminal?
No. Cowork uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code with no terminal required. You start a task from the same message box you use for chat, on desktop, web or mobile.
Can Claude Cowork work on files on my computer?
Yes, through the Claude desktop app. Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in the cloud, and Claude reaches only the local folders you connect, while the desktop app is open. For tasks that run entirely on your computer, Anthropic points you to Claude Code in the desktop app.
Can I use Claude Cowork and Claude Code together?
Yes. A plugin you add is saved to your Claude account and works in chat, Cowork and Claude Code. I research and write in Cowork and build in Claude Code.
